The innovative learning platforms shoot out of the ground like mushrooms these days. One of the latest buzzwords is LXP or learning experience platform. A promising medium that is conquering the L&D world.

However… What exactly is an LXP really? And how is it different from the classic LMS? To answer these questions, we did some research for you.

What is an LXP?

Do you want to know how a learning experience platform works? Think about a streaming service you use today (e.g. Netflix, Spotify, Twitch). An LXP also offers engaging (learning) content that users can easily consume, wherever and whenever they want.

An LXP contains all kinds of online learning activities (e.g. blogs, podcasts or videos) and e-learning courses. Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), the learning platform is able to propose other learning activities based on user history. Just like those well-known streaming services that you have probably used before.

LMS vs LXP: find the three differences

Self-directed learning

An LMS is set up so that the administrator (usually someone from HR or L&D) controls what learning content appears. This might be, for example, the training courses that are available for specific job profiles or target groups.

Even when LMS users have the possibility to choose courses based on their own preferences, they are still limited to a preselected learning offer.

With the LXP, this changes. The control over the learning process is largely in the hands of the end users. It goes without saying that the L&D department still manages the learning platform and prepares certain mandatory courses. In an LXP, however, users will have access to a much wider range of courses. Just like with a streaming service, employees can easily consult the entire library of e-learning courses and digital learning activities offered by the organization.

Thanks to AI, the LXP knows the learning history of users and provides useful suggestions for additional courses. In this way, the LXP drives employees to take control of their own learning path and steer their own learning process.

Adaptive learning

Adaptive learning works with AI and data analysis to highly individualize the learning path of users. It analyzes the unique needs of each user, providing suggestions for other learning activities.

An LMS also tracks users’ learning activities, and provides an global picture of their needs. However, L&D managers still need to conceive and predefine a learning path. With an LXP, there is no such thing. With the help of AI, adaptive learning paths emerge automatically and evolve over time to the changing needs of users.

Social learning

Social learning takes form when employees work together, exchange information and knowledge, and learn from experienced colleagues. In recent years, this has become an important pillar of the learning journey, and quite rightly so.

On an LMS, social learning is rather limited to the content that users themselves publish on forums. An LXP takes social learning to a higher level. Users communicate with each other and with their trainers just like they do on social media platforms. They also share external online resources in a similar way, such as interesting blogs, podcasts and videos.

The AI technology of an LXP ensures that users don’t have to process irrelevant content. The learning platform looks at the learning history and interests of the users and offers them interesting content based on that.

That way, the LXP streamlines social learning and provides an enjoyable user experience for both L&D and employees.

Gone with the LMS, in with the LXP?

Do you need to trade in your existing learning platform for a brand new, innovative LXP now? No, you don’t have to go that far. On the contrary, an LXP can be a powerful addition to your current LMS. Moreover, it changes and improves the user experience significantly

Don’t have an LMS yet? Well, that’s fine too. An LXP can exist perfectly on its own.
